The Do’s and Don’ts of Bedroom Feng Shui: 40 In-Depth Tips with Explanations

Updated: Feb 3

Ancient Feng Shui, Explained for Today’s Lifestyle.

The bedroom is your sanctuary—a space where you recharge, dream, and connect with your inner self.

In Feng Shui, the bedroom is considered one of the most important areas of the home because it directly influences your health, relationships, and overall well-being. The energy (Qi “气” or "Chi") in your bedroom can either nourish or deplete you, depending on how the space is arranged.

As a professional Feng Shui consultant, I’ve seen how small adjustments in the bedroom can lead to profound changes in people’s lives. Whether you’re struggling with restless sleep, strained relationships, or a lack of focus, the solution might lie in the way your bedroom is set up. In this guide, I’ll share 40 in-depth tips—both practical and philosophical—to help you create a bedroom that supports your physical, emotional, and wealth growth (that's the most important feature).

The Do’s of Bedroom Feng Shui

  1. Position Your Bed in the Command Position

First, we need to understand what is command position in feng shui? It's the optimial position of the layout of the house or a specifc furniture

Choose a direction based on your Five Elements (want to find out which element your life naturally adopts? check this out: How to Find Out Your Five Elments)

    • For individuals whose energy aligns with water, wood, or fire, placing the bed in the north, east, southeast, or south enhances harmony and supports their natural balance.

    • For those whose energy resonates with earth or metal, positioning the bed in the northeast, northwest, southwest, or west strengthens their foundational stability and vitality.

Note: In Feng Shui, the term "喜" (as in "五行喜水") signifies compatibility and amplification rather than personal preference. It describes an element that nurtures and complements your intrinsic energy, much like a favorable environment that promotes a plant’s optimal growth. This subtlety is key to understanding the profound connection between your energy and the placement of your surroundings. Incorporate the Five Elements Harmoniously—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water—represent different aspects of life. Balancing them in your bedroom creates harmony. For example, add wooden furniture (Wood), a small candle (Fire), ceramic decor (Earth), metal frames (Metal), or a mirror (Water).

The bed should be placed so you can see the door without being directly in line with it. This "command position" gives you a sense of security and control, allowing you to rest peacefully.

  1. A solid wall behind the bed provides additional support, symbolizing stability in life. I've seen people leave a small space between their bed and their wall-it is very bad for your energy. Don't do it.

Beautiful, isn’t it? As long as it’s not your typical bedroom.
Beautiful, isn’t it? As long as it’s not your typical bedroom.
  2. Use a Solid Headboard

A sturdy headboard, preferably made of wood or upholstered fabric, acts as a grounding force. It prevents energy from escaping behind you while you sleep and symbolizes support in your waking life.

  1. Opt for Calming Colors

Soft, muted tones like light blues, greens, and neutrals create a calming atmosphere. These colors promote relaxation and restful sleep, making your bedroom a true retreat from the outside world.

  1. Keep Your Bedroom Clutter-Free

Clutter blocks the flow of Qi, creating mental chaos and stress.

I actually have a better explanation for this. Chaos means a high entropy (the extent of chaosity). In our universe, entropy is always increasing. All items tend to become chaotic: it literally takes no energy to remain chaotic while life or any organisation, requires energy to stay away from chaos.

This is the reason why Life forms rely on anti-entropy and Feng Shui is a cure that uncovers the latent code of the universe.

Regularly decluttering your bedroom is a way to reduce entropy., especially under the bed and in closets, allows energy to circulate freely, promoting peace and clarity.

  2. Use Soft, Natural Lighting: Harsh lighting creates Yang energy, which can disrupt sleep. Opt for soft, warm lighting with dimmable lights or lamps to promote relaxation and a sense of calm.

  3. Place Nightstands on Both Sides of the Bed Symmetry in the bedroom promotes balance in relationships. Matching nightstands and lamps symbolize equality and partnership, fostering harmony between you and your loved ones.

  4. Add Plants for Fresh Energy

Plants like peace lilies or snake plants purify the air and bring vibrant, living energy into your bedroom. They also symbolize growth and vitality, making them a wonderful addition to your space.

Additional Feng Shui Tip for the Bedroom: The Role of Lucky Plants and Personal Experiences

I want to highlight the role of aloe vera in the bedroom. It is very important given aloe vera can significantly enhance its Feng Shui energy.

    1. Aloe vera, often referred to as "Dragon Tongue" in Chinese, is celebrated for its powerful Yin energy.

It is believed to absorb and neutralize negative and polluted energies, particularly those caused by stress, illness, or emotional tension. Unlike ordinary houseplants, aloe vera doesn’t just beautify your space—it functions as a natural purifier and energetic shield.

I placed aloe vera in a shadowy corner of my bedroom that always felt a bit off, as though the energy there was heavy and uninviting. Within a few weeks, I began to notice subtle shifts. My sleep improved; I felt more refreshed in the mornings. Even the air in the room seemed lighter, almost as if the plant was silently working to cleanse the space.

After a few months, I extended the experiment to other areas of my home, placing aloe vera in corners and spaces that felt neglected or stagnant. The difference was undeniable. My family remarked on how peaceful the house felt, and even minor irritations, like frequent colds or unexplained fatigue, seemed to fade away. It’s incredible how something so small—a single plant—could have such an outsized impact on the energy of a space.

How to Place Your Feng Shui Plants: Aloe Vera

Position aloe vera in areas where stagnant or negative energy tends to accumulate, such as corners, near electronics, or near windows that face busy streets.

      - Avoid Overuse: Avoid placing too many aloe vera plants in the bedroom or directly near your bed, as an overabundance of Yin energy could disturb the room's balance.

      - Energy Check: Regularly check the plant's health—plants that wither or seem unhealthy may indicate an overload of absorbed negative energy and should be replaced.

Adding this "purifying star" to your bedroom can promote health, tranquility, and restorative sleep. Paired with real-life evidence, it becomes clear that small adjustments in your environment can yield significant, positive energy shifts.

  5. Use High-Quality Bedding

Your bedding is in direct contact with your body every night. High-quality, natural fabrics like cotton or linen promote better sleep and positive energy, ensuring you wake up refreshed.

  6. Choose Artwork that elevates Feng Shui

Artwork influences your subconscious mind. Choose landscapes, abstract art, or images that evoke joy and tranquility to create a serene atmosphere in your bedroom.

Peony Paintings: Representing wealth, prosperity, and an abundance of blessings, these paintings bring vibrant energy into the room.

Television: Though not a painting, having a TV in the bedroom disrupts the calm and harmonious energy needed for rest.

Fierce Animal Paintings: Images of aggressive or wild animals can create tension and unease, disturbing the room's tranquility.

The Don’ts of Bedroom Feng Shui

  1. Don’t Place Your Bed Under a Window

I know you might object this. There are so many people doing so and they look beautiful on the pictures.

Windows are considered unstable in Feng Shui, and sleeping under one can lead to restless sleep and a lack of support in life. However, there are ways to solve this: use heavy curtains and a solid headboard to create stability.

Feng Shui, at its core, is not about magic or irrational beliefs—it's about designing environments that resonate with human well-being on both physical and emotional levels.

Think about this: science can measure air quality, noise levels, and even lighting conditions, but it often struggles to quantify the feeling of harmony in a space. Why do certain homes feel calming while others feel chaotic? Why do some layouts make us feel more in control and at peace, while others create subtle discomfort? Feng Shui addresses these unmeasurable yet profoundly impactful elements.

  2. Avoid Mirrors Facing the Bed

Mirrors reflect energy and can disrupt sleep by creating a sense of restlessness. Place mirrors on closet doors or inside cabinets where they’re not directly facing the bed.

  3. Don’t Sleep with Your Feet Facing the Door

In Feng Shui, having your bed directly aligned with the door is often called the "coffin position," as it mimics the way the deceased are laid out during funerals, with feet facing the door. While this may sound extreme, the principle behind it is rooted in maintaining a sense of privacy and security in your personal space.

There is a reason that you rarely see this kind of position in a bedroom👇

From a practical perspective, when your bed is the first thing visible upon opening the door, it compromises your sense of privacy. Imagine lying in bed, and the door opens—your most intimate space is immediately exposed to anyone entering the room. This setup not only feels intrusive but can also create subtle feelings of vulnerability, as you lack control over who or what enters your view.

In Feng Shui, this alignment is thought to disrupt the peaceful energy of the bedroom, as doors are pathways for Qi (energy) to flow. A bed directly facing this energy path may result in restless sleep, as the Qi is too active in such a position.

For a better layout, try positioning the bed so it’s not directly aligned with the door but still within view for a sense of control. If moving the bed isn’t possible, consider using a screen, curtain, or even a small piece of furniture to block the direct line of sight and restore privacy and harmony.

  4. Avoid Overhead Beams or Slanted Ceilings These create oppressive energy, leading to feelings of pressure and stress. Use fabric canopies or paint the beam to blend with the ceiling.

  5. Don’t Use Sharp or Pointed Decor Sharp angles create "poison arrows," harmful energy currents that disrupt the flow of Qi. Opt for rounded or curved furniture and decor to soften the energy in your bedroom.

  6. Avoid Excessive Water ElementsWhile water symbolizes wealth, too much of it in the bedroom (e.g., large aquariums) can lead to emotional instability. Limit water elements to small fountains or subtle decor.

  7. Avoid Too many Electronics in the BedroomElectronics emit electromagnetic fields (EMFs) that disrupt sleep and create Yang energy. Remove TVs, computers, and exercise equipment from the bedroom.

  8. Don’t Hang Chandeliers Over the Bed: Heavy objects above the bed create a sense of pressure and can lead to anxiety or health issues. Opt for lightweight, simple lighting fixtures.

  9. Avoid Sleeping in a Room with Too Many Doors: Multiple doors create chaotic energy flow, making it difficult to relax and feel secure. If unavoidable, keep doors closed at night to stabilize the energy.

  10. No Large Mirrors Near the Bed

Placing a large mirror at the head of the bed can disrupt the flow of energy and may lead to feelings of unease. Additionally, the reflective surface amplifies energy in the room, which can disturb restful sleep.

  11. Avoid Red for Certain Zodiac Signs and Star Signs

Individuals born under the Chinese zodiac signs of Snake or Horse, or with the Western zodiac signs Leo and Virgo, should be cautious when using red in their bedroom. For those born under the Snake or Horse zodiac, red represents the element of fire, which they typically avoid due to its potential for imbalance.

Advanced Tips for Bedroom Feng Shui

  1. Activate the Love Corner The far right corner of your bedroom (when standing at the door) is the love and relationship area. Enhance this space with pairs of objects (e.g., two candles, two crystals) or romantic artwork to strengthen your romantic life.

  2. Use Crystals for Energy Enhancement Crystals are also critical for Feng Shui. You can select crystals like rose quartz (for love) or amethyst (for relaxation) can amplify positive energy in your bedroom. Place them on your nightstand or under your pillow.

  3. Balance the Room’s Energy with Aromatherapy Essential oils like lavender or chamomile promote relaxation and balance the energy in your bedroom. Use a diffuser or place a few drops on your pillow before bed.

  4. Avoid Sleeping in a Room with Exposed Beams Exposed beams create "cutting energy," which can lead to health issues and emotional stress. Cover beams with fabric or use a canopy bed to diffuse the energy.

  5. Use a Bed Skirt to Ground the Bed A bed skirt creates a sense of grounding and prevents energy from escaping under the bed. Choose a bed skirt in a color that complements your bedding.

Other Easy Yet Fascinating Feng Shui Tips:

    Avoid Red Wallets or Bags

While red is often seen as a symbol of luck and prosperity in many aspects of life, it is a no-go for wallets or bags. In Feng Shui, red represents "fire," which burns wealth. Red wallets are believed to attract financial loss, as their energy disperses rather than contains wealth. Instead, choose black or deep blue wallets to symbolize water, which nourishes wealth. Alternatively, white and yellow combinations also attract stable prosperity.

    Fix That Squeaky Rocking Chair

A squeaky or unstable rocking chair is thought to disrupt the stability of your life, causing health or career instability. Fixing or removing it promotes steadiness and a calm energy flow in your home.

    Discard Chipped Plates and Bowls

Eating from damaged plates or bowls symbolizes a "broken household" in Feng Shui. It not only disrupts family harmony but also impairs the ability to retain wealth. Replace them with whole, undamaged tableware to ensure abundance and unity.

Get Rid of Fake or Dead Flowers

Artificial flowers, empty flower pots, or dead plants symbolize stagnation and a lack of vitality. These items bring negative energy and should be replaced with fresh, thriving plants that foster life and growth.

    Salt-Cleanse Old Clothes Before Donation

When donating old clothes, sprinkle salt over them and let them sit for 24 hours before sending them off. This ensures your energy isn’t carried away, preserving your blessings and luck.

    Repair Broken Furniture Promptly

Broken furniture, such as chairs, tables, or cabinets, symbolizes stagnation and setbacks in Feng Shui. Fixing or replacing them invites fresh energy and removes blockages in your life.

    Keep Wallets Off the Floor

Placing your wallet on the floor symbolizes disrespect for your wealth, making it "easy to lose money." Always store your wallet in a clean and elevated place.

    Avoid Empty Rice Containers

An empty rice container is considered a symbol of scarcity. Ensure that your rice jar is always at least half-full to signify continuous abundance and wealth in your household.
